The Fellowship Program

In keeping with the central value the Society places on bibliography as a critical framework, the BSA funds a number of fellowships to promote inquiry and research in books and other textual artifacts in both traditional and emerging formats.

The Society offers more than a dozen fellowships supporting a broad range of bibliographical pursuits. Learn more about our fellowship program and find information about materials required with your application by visiting the Fellowship page on this website. In addition to the broad array of Fellowship opportunities we have offered in the past, the Society is pleased to announce two new categories of Fellowships supporting research by midwestern bibliographers and collections professionals (respectively) this year thanks to generous support from The Caxton Club and the Peck-Stacpoole Foundation.

The Mitchell Prize

The Mitchell Prize serves as an encouragement to scholars engaged in bibliographical scholarship on 18th-century periodicals published in English or in any language but within the British Isles and its colonies and former colonies.

The New Scholars Program 2021, CFA

The Bibliographical Society of America’s New Scholars Program seeks to promote the work of scholars who are new to the field of bibliography, broadly defined to include any research that deals with the creation, production, publication, distribution, reception, transmission, and subsequent history of all textual artifacts (manuscript, print, digital, from clay and stone to laptops and iPads).

Each year, the New Scholars Program invites three scholars in the early stages of their careers to present fifteen-minute talks on their current, unpublished research in the field of bibliography as members of a panel at the annual meeting of the Society, which takes place in January. Those selected for the panel will receive an honorarium of $1,000, and will be invited to present their work as part of BSA’s 2021 virtual annual meeting.

The Society thanks George Ong for his generosity, which has doubled the honoraria awarded to winning scholars from previous years. We are grateful to him for sustaining this level of support through the next four award cycles.

Program Committee Call for Proposals

The Program Committee’s tri-annual call for proposals for programs scheduled for January – April 2021 is now open, with the usual October 15 submission deadline.

As the safety of in-person events remains uncertain, we can only accept proposals for virtual events. In addition to funding (e.g., honoraria to speakers), the Society can provide some administrative support and virtual webinar hosting via Zoom.
