Mind the Gap: Recent Provenance of Antiquarian Materials
October 8, 2015
A two-day symposium sponsored and organized by the Bibliographical Society of America
Friday November 6 and Saturday November 7, 2015
At the Grolier Club, 47 East 60 Street, New York
Scholars researching book history have focused increasingly on the history of collecting and chains of ownership known as provenance. Yet these studies rarely touch on recent owners: Where has the book been for the last century? This conference investigates why detailed and complete provenance is integral to contemporary collecting and to bibliographical scholarship, documenting and often authenticating each work as a historical object, establishing its significance and providing its social and political context. Tickets are $75 ($25 for students), advance reservations are required, and space is limited to 150 seats. To register contact Michele Randall, BSA Executive Secretary, at bsa@bibsocamer.org.
Announcing the 2016 BSA Fellowship Program
October 8, 2015
The Society invites applications for its ninth annual Katharine Pantzer Senior Fellowship in Bibliography and the British Book Trades as well as its annual short-term fellowships, all of which support bibliographical inquiry and research in the history of the book trades and in publishing history. Eligible topics may concentrate on books and documents in any field, but should focus on the book or manuscript (the physical object) as historical evidence. Such topics may include establishing a text or studying the history of book production, publication, distribution, collecting, or reading. Thanks to the generosity of donors, certain special fellowships support research in particular areas of study. Note that this year there are two new fellowships, one supporting bibliographical research in the Pforzheimer Library at the Harry Ransom Center, the other on culinary bibliography supported by the Pine Tree Foundation. For further information on all the fellowships and application guidelines see the Fellowships page on our website. The deadline for applying is December 1, 2015.
Books and Print between Cultures, 1500-1900
September 11, 2015
This interdisciplinary symposium at Amherst College on September 18-19, 2015, will investigate the role that books (codices, rolls, scrolls, and other related media), prints, and their associated technologies played in mediating and instantiating cultural difference in the early modern period. By framing the history of books and prints as meandering and material, this symposium aims to contribute new dialogues to the study of the global early modern.

Call for papers: Mind the Gap
January 18, 2015
Mind the Gap: Recent Provenance and Antiquarian Material, a conference on provenance, planned for November 2015 at The Grolier Club, New York City
In light of recent thefts and forgeries, provenance has served to verify authenticity and legal ownership. But how do common practices such as sophistication, restoration, and rebinding effectively banish significant evidence of past owners, institutional collections, and readers? This conference investigates why detailed and complete provenance is integral to contemporary collecting and to bibliographical scholarship, documenting each work as a historical object and providing its social and political context.
